Lowering the Voting age.

I was thinking about this the other day. We granted Universal suffrage in most of the western world in the early 20th century (Wikipedia page). So now i feel its time we extended that right to a lower ages. Why shouldn't kids be allowed to vote if they want? We got plenty of adults that don't take voting that seriously so i see no harm in lowering the age to 12 or 13. I know they may not take it seriously or even want to, Like a lot of adults. How many people around the world vote for joke party's? I know my self i would if we had any here in Australia and didn't take politics more seriously. I don't think much of our local politics Ive wanted for a while to run a plant or Animal (especially a very ugly ram we have) as mayor of the shire :P

I don't see that theirs any harm in giving everyone from the age of 12 the right to vote, some of them would like to others wont bother. Much like people over 18. It would make our Society more democratic after all they are citizens of it so why don't they have a say in it? Its there future we are screwing up after all. So isn't it only fair they have there say?

I don't suppose it will totally alter the political landscape. Im sure a lot of them would simply not vote, or vote the same way as there parents. A small few who are interested in it would go out and place meaningful votes. I'm sure in some places they may all vote for joke party's but that dosnt do any harm :P.

On a subject more close to home, I cant help but feel at the same time we need to scrap this undemocratic compulsory voting... Yer what ever happened to your right not to vote? Here if you don't you get fined. Our politics needs to change, we need more grass root politics and proportional representation to give the minor party's a chance.
